the gear oil should not have made it to the shoes. there is a drain hole in the backing plate so if gear oil should get passed the seals it will drain out the back of the backing plate. these get clogged up with dirt. remove hub and scrape the groove out all the way around in the backing plate. the groove is the "catch" for the gear oil then it runs out the hole.
maybe get better inner seals. I have run stock leather seals and had bad outer seals and the inners did not leak. clean up the surface where the seal ride and sand it smooth if needed.
