You can buy heat shield stuff at plumbing stores that minimize war-page as you weld which helps, best to weld an inch or so and let it cool. Places where the metal might warp you may not be able to get behind. Using a wet rag to cool the sounding metal as you weld help minimize it also. Again, a body shop may not be expensive to do what you want, take your part and get an estimate, metal is clean, no prep time involved, unless you just want to do it yourself.

If you have a later model truck, check the bed, that's usually where putty or sealant is added which can be bought at a dealer or auto paint store.
