I always wondered, if they had to choose two gears to synchronize, why they didn't make 2nd gear synchronized instead of fourth. Downshifting is more challenging than upshifting, with 2nd being the harder one. It always seemed unnecessary to me to synchronize 4th, since it's so easy to shift into without being synchronized.
Maybe there were constraints on the size of the transmission, and synchronizing 2nd instead of 4th would have exceeded that size constraint(?). I kind of doubt it, though.
Seems like a synchro 2nd would be much more useful.
