That brings back memories. I grew up on property with beaver ponds in MT. Fished every day I could. They got used to us and would swim around while we were swimming and fishing. The little ones are really cute when they slap their tails on the water before they dive. Mom gets scared - WHAP! … then the babies whap, whap, whap. :)
Once they get established and have a big pond and lodges they settle down and eat willow bark and get fat and lazy, kind of like me except I like breakfast burritos.
The willows grow like bamboo so it keeps them busy.
Between the droughts and normal silting of the ponds, they lost habitat and started moving downstream and dammed up culverts and flooded the roads. The county trapped them out and now the big ponds are just meadows with a little stream cutting through. Visited last year and Silver Bow county was talking about bringing beavers back so they can get ponds and trout fishing going again.
