If they are torn at the bottom or rust is present from self life, don't use. If you rub your thumb across the cloth on the filter side and it tears, don't use. Otherwise if they still look new, they are probably fine to use. If you have any doubt about their condition, you probably shouldn't use.

I've got some Hastings filters that I've had for at least 15 years, and they sat in a Hastings warehouse for who knows how may years, but they still look new, and I use them with no problem. I have an original Chrysler filter in it's box, cloth is torn at bottom from sitting and cloth is more gray looking so I definitely would not use it. I only use it to compare to new filters to identify the newer style that is larger before I buy.
