Thanks, I'm rebuilding the engine, so I'm thinking I'll attach a homemade pointer to the cover in a location where it will point at the zero-degree mark on the pulley when the #1 piston is at TDC. I'll be able to access the piston easily because the head will be off.
I was just wondering if these engines didn't have pointers, and how they were timed without one, but then I saw the remnants of the spot welds, so I realized it had a pointer originally.
