approximating TDC?

Starting with a piece of coat hanger or something to approximate your temporary pointer.

Then pull to pull the plug and use that access to determine when the piston comes up to TDC, and when the piston begins to leave TDC.

The halfway point between those two marks should be TDC.. Which "should" correspond to what the crank pulley is suggesting and where to locate your newly created timing cover pointer.
