disaster averted! I once drove my 53 Pontiac around for almost 3 months with no gear oil in it. I started to hear a whirring noise on the highway one day. then it dawned on my that i never filled it up after replacing broken axle shaft. (was a 500 hp 409 chev that shifted at 7000 rpms) I got it home. pulled it, things were bluish. I cleaned everything and shockingly the bearings looked great! reset backlash, installed and put oil in and drove another 10 years. american made bearings are the best!
