This is common on the civilian fuel pumps. It's a pressed in pin that works itself out as a the pump body gets fatigued and there is no way you can lock the pin in. If you want a reliable mechanical pump, go with a Military pump, the pin is locked in so you don't have to worry about it backing out. It has a primer lever, and pump to run your wiper motors.
