I'm not knowledgeable on the stake & platform bed, however the u-bolts are normally installed in the opposite direction - plate and bolts on the bottom side of frame. This probably is to prevent deforming the frame as you see in the picture. The frame is high strength Chromoly steel and when heated turns to soft steel which will loose frame integrity.
