Great idea, to get him some tools. My dad hated working on cars and discouraged me from it. I still had an interest and bought myself a Snap On 3/8" ratchet and a set of SK Wayne deep sockets when I was 10 or 12 and still have them.
Look on Ebay. You might be able to find some higher end used tools and a little box to put them in.
