I have two fans on my rig a puller and a pusher - the pusher seldom comes on. Both are mounted away from the radiator . The pusher is 1/8 away from the rad. Any closer and it will touch the rad during some situations. those plastic mounting ties are junk - they make a mess of the fins and long term you will wear through one of your rad tubes. They work fine on a street car that may see less than 100 miles a year but on an old flexy vehicle that is going to be driven or worked a bit those ties will only cost you money.
Build an adjustable mounting bracket that gives you some ability to move the fan in or out. Mine has 1/4 adjustable slots - i am glad I did it that way.
