The 1947 to 1956 parts book shows the mirrors as: short arm on express bed, long arm on stake and platform bed, and list them both as “* Indicates use as required.” If you had the express body and installed the canvass cover, it would be appropriate to install the long arm to provide greater safety and view. The stake and platform bed obviously extend out beyond the side of the cab, tow trucks also used the long arm, so the long arm is appropriate there also. Dodge probably installed the long arm and short arm on express bed trucks to offer flexibility to the customer to meet customer needs. I don’t believe short/long arms were driven by year changes but by the intended use of the truck, especially if you couldn’t have a clear view of the rear of the truck.
