Right on Clint. I remember when I was in high school it was common for people to dress for work, for travel, etc. Anyway, my shop teachers would always either remove the tie or tuck it in their shirt before demonstrating the use of a lathe, drill press, table saw, etc. And gloves were never allowed.
If some protection is needed, use an old towel or shop rag. At least it won't be so likely to pull your arm into the winch.
