I think they were glued originally. The topic was overed pretty well years ago over on the WW2 forum. the WC51/52 and the 6x6s had random pieces glued together as well in some production runs. it would make assembly on the line much faster if they were glued. They just put them in like big pieces of plywood and then installed strips.
