In my WC53 carryall re-build, I've finally gotten around to reassembling the wood floor with new white oak boards. It is the obvious forerunner of the post war PWs and their wooden bed bottoms.
My original floor has only two metal strips in the center with the boards almost appearing to be random widths joined with tongue and groove edges except under the two metal strips.
The post war '46-'68 PWs are pictured with five metal strips and there's even one (restored) with seven.
My guess is, when the war was over, standardizing the board width with plentiful steel strips hastened assembly?
