When in neutral you are spinning the input shaft and the cluster gear. So you have the straight cut input shaft gear turning the straight cut gear on the cluster. There is going to be some gear grumbling noise.

The putting you are seeing will be an issue with time. That bearing is spinning all the time except when you are in 4th gear.
