Pay attention to the ratio's. 4.88 is 8-3/4 ring gear, 4.89 is 9-5/8 ring gear. You can replace a 9-5/8 unit with an 8-3/4 unit but you have to have step down studs and multiple gaskets. As long as you're staying with the same size unit, and just changing gears, 5.83 to 4.89, yes. I'll see what I can do with the header to avoid confusion.
