A vac unit has the most vacuum at full vacuum, which is less throttle. It adds horsepower for FREE! at low to mid throttle. But if you hit a hill at that much advance it would ping/detonate too early, pushing pistons down while they were still traveling upwards. Loss of power ensues, plus sucked valves, blown headgaskets, holes in pistons, broken rings- all around very bad for engines to ping.

For the last 50 years, the only engines withou vac on them were industrial one-speed-at-one-load, or full throttle uses, like boats which never coast downhill, or racers.

I run vac adv on all my old iron. Thye just run better.
