Window crank things.

On the carryall, I've been working on one of the window cranking mechanisms. The arms and all that stuff seem fine. It looks like someone at some time bashed the crank shaft that the handle turns. The frame was bent and the annoying bit is the little 6 tooth pinion gear inside there was shattered.

Now my question, does anyone have one of these little gears?

And, what's the spring inside the shaft housing supposed to do? To me it seems mighty complicated and I can't figure why its in there.

Anyone?
