Early and late transmissions? Before and After transmissions are interchangeable without changing the transmission hump and passenger floor sheet metal. If your talking about having to change the hump to allow for the transmission shifter, then your talking a NP420 trans. If that’s correct, there are two options. If you have an early M37 NP420 you can bolt it in and change the floor boards. If you have a NP420 from a PW, then you need to change the bell housing from a PW then bolt in the trans and change the floor pieces.

Bottom line the bell housing on the nonsyncro PW doesn’t have the same bolt pattern as the later synchronized NP420 transmission.

The early M37 NP transmission has the bolt pattern as the nonsyncro PW transmission and is a direct bolt in.
