Could have a thrust washer that moved?
Were you able to get the center bolt in without problem?
If you did your problem is probably ahead of that point.
If you had any effort to get that bolt in, the rear thrust is wrong.
I found that without the proper bench holder
A heavy stool laid on it's side, then lay the case, tail shaft down through, between the stool legs until it rest on the back of the bell housing pointed up or slight angle.
Now you can install the pieces and clutch packs as you go, checking for movement by spinning.
