Check the transmission input shaft retainer to see if the oil return hole is the correct position. Also check the shift rails for leakage. There should be plugs at the end of the shift rail tubes in the trans cover.

Are you shure it’s gear oil.? It should have a very distinctive smell to it if it is. You did not say what engine you have. It could be a rear engine main seal leaking. Valve covers on a V8 could be leaking oil on to the top of the bell housing which will get inside of the bell housing and soak things.

First thing to is confirm is what type of oil you are seeing.
