not much to really keep the oil in on that transmission . there is a a spiral groove on the input shaft that helps return the oil back to the box. the weight of the oil and correct oil weight come to mind. my book calls for 5.5 pints of lubricant i am not sure if that includes a PTO. My manual lists SAE 50 engine oil or SAE 90 gear oil for a NP420
