Head gasket should be good, I sure hope it is, its a new Cummins one and I switched to ARP head studs and higher torque. That puppy is squished down good.
Cavitation is more likely to show up on a low pressure cap than a higher one. But from what is happening I agree with you, 16lbs may be too high. It will be interesting perhaps frustrating to see what happens on long climbs with the 7lb cap. Things heat up when idling or on a super long climb up a hill at speed.
I am learning to down shift and drive it like a big rig when climbing. I may start ripping stuff off and changing it over to aluminum parts.......lots of rebuilding to do that though.
