Checked timing with a timing light on both trucks for comparison as I know the WDX is running fine with no overheating problems.

Checked at idle and had Martie rev the engines up also. On the truck in question the spark advanced nice and even starting at about 3 to 5 degrees before TDC and advancing to about 10 to 15 at approximately 1000 to 1500 RPM. It never increased any further at higher revs. It acted almost identical to the WDX which is fine. The WDX started out at about 1 to 3 degrees before TDC and also ended about 10 to 15 at approximately the same RPMs.

Very comparable between the two. In fact the B3PW (the truck I am having trouble with) was actually more steady than the WDX. The WDX timing mark waiverd around a little.

So without taking off the distributor and having it gone through, I think I can rule out broken springs for now.

Tomorrow the thermostat is coming out. It is a 160 degree of a slightly more modern design than original. I will heat it in a pan of water along with my NOS 160 degree original part numbered thermostat and see how they compare. Will even throw in another that I took out of a truck at one time in the past just for comparison.

I was half tempted to change the thermostat when I replaced the head gasket, but I am still glad I did not. Hope this is not boring everyone. I hope it can be of help to someone else someday.

Junior
