I examined the head and block closely when I had the head off and scraped and cleaned them, filed the head, and ended with a brake cleaner wipe down until the rags were clean. I could not find any indication of leakage between cylinders. Unfortunately I do not have a straight edge good enough to check the block and head. I wished I had done a compression test before removing the head, but I got focused on the head and forgot.

My WDX had a leak between cylinders at one time. I could clearly see it on the top of the block and the underside of the gasket. Nothing like that on this truck. I fixed that one on the WDX by using a new gasket and a bead of red anaerobic sealer in that area. On this truck I installed a modern gasket coated on both sides with Permatex copper coat high temp sealer.

I tested the thermostat today along with my NOS thermostat in the same pan on the stove. Used a food thermometer and both started opening at about 165 degrees (both are marked 160). They opened at the same rate and were fully open at about 175-180. I can rule out the thermostat.

Next up is to tear the hood and fenders off again and remove the radiator and cowl and check the water pump and distribution tube. (I get a lot of use out of Neverseize). I have never had a water pump go bad without leaking severely. This one does not leak at all. I am hesitant to install a nice re-manufactured pump I have as it has the short fan hub, not the long fan hub used to support the additional heave cast iron pulley that drives the governor. And, of course, now when they rebuild water pumps they press and glue the hub on the shaft instead of the old tried and true method of pinning them on.
