I was considering the 404T Deere at one point when I started building my last Carryall. Its a snug fit actually for that engine and its pretty heavy. The effort and parts availability of the 4bt make it easier so being different will probably not fit your tight budget unless you are good at machining or having machined parts built.

I pondered a 3-53T from a Gama goat for a bit and also looked into the 4-53T Silvers. I decided one was just not up to snuff, and the other is just a beast of an engine; however I do have a second Carryall that is going to get a very hopped up 4-53T and some other goodies.

I ended up settling with the ISB170 that Don mentioned. It seems to be a good engine with good parts availability. The wiring isn't that scary once you sit down and sort it all out with a multi-meter. I blended my harnesses together to build a custom system running CANbus controls and features.

I still stand by the old saying, of "Good, Fast, or Cheap,... pick two!" As mine is approaching the 6 year mark but I'm not invested any deeper than a regular restoration would cost if paying a shop or buying a complete one, and I'll have what I consider a good driver with 170hp, 420 tq, disc brakes, and power assist steering.
