Installing PTO

I could use your help here. I am installing a PTO from a 57 Power Wagon onto a 1948 Power Wagon. The truck is not disassembled so I had to take out the floorboard, clutch and brake assembly to make room for the installation. I also bought a spacer for the pto since it is from the new model PW. I can almost get the pto to fit the transmission, but it seems the gears arent meshing properly so I can't quite get the pto to go flush against the transmission. I have never done this before so could you please tell me what I am doing wrong or at least not doing properly? One other question: Will the pto shifter from the newer PW fit my older one?
