The 3rd gear noise in both my dad’s ‘50 and my ‘50 torch buggy is spectacular. Previously had a ‘46 wdx, WCs, and a few M-37s with nothing like this. My dad had a mechanic where he worked go through his - found nothing and still noisy. Previous owner said they went through mine twice - once by themselves and once with a mechanic in the ‘60s. The tech came to the conclusion that the holes machined inside the case are not aligned exactly and allow gear sides to chatter.
Mine will stay within a 20 mile radius of our place so unless it stops in its tracks or throws pieces through the case, it’ll just get growl and howl all it wants to.
