Thanks for that most comprehensive answer.

So, in other words I have a bare canvas on which to paint. What I have planned is already something pretty traditional then. I'll prob. go with "Island Fir" for deck and rails, despite Doc Dave's kind offer of white oak. (Although, there is a downed Madrone back behind our house that I would match against his oak for hardness. Problem is it would probably twist into a corkscrew before I could get it bolted down.)
