Can you get your hands on a rock polisher with some course grit? I did a bunch of connectors on my carryall and this was pretty much the first step. Dissasemble, toss it all in the rock polisher over night with a good squirt of dish washer soap. (I prefer Joy dishwashing liquid.)

Next morning you have a nice pile of brand new parts to work with.

You will need a GOOD solder iron. And REAL rosin core electronics solder that includes lead and tin. Eww scary scary. Reassemble it with new pigtails made from braided wire and the old cleaned up ends. Heat shrink would be a nice touch. You have a heat gun?
