I have the original (rebuilt) ‘52 tranny in mine, and the noise is nowhere near as bad as you describe.
I don’t feel it is that much different than the other gears.
In my case, during the restoration I was able to find one of the last (?) NOS large cluster gears as part of the tranny rebuild, along with all new bearings and a few other parts. Running SAE straight 50 motor oil in it.
