NP420 on a Small Block Hydraulic Bellhousing?

Is it reasonably possible to mount a NP420 in place of a NP435 (behind a 318)? Anyone know if the bearing retainers are close to the same size? How about pilot bearings? I have a nice 420 and PTO here at the shop. I'm considering my options before I decide to swap out my NP435 for one with a PTO opening on the driver side, then buy a really expensive PTO for it.
