I was even thinking about going 'gas'. I have available a nice 350 set-up. Al Grover Jr. did one that way with a 'V' drive. Open boat with center console and a dodger cover. Had to be a WET ride, as we know. I don't know what kind of speed he got out of it. The boat does have it's limits. He also did a twin engine for some Gov't. agency. Believe they were 4 cylinder Lehman's. Engine box went across entire width of the boat. Also did a few 24 footers (Coast Guard?) Saw one with a step bottom near the bow.

Note: All Grovers could benefit from a bow thruster.

Is your new boat the 1940 wood you mentioned?....Love the classics.
