We get a lot of Hackberry around here. grows in fencerows a lot as the birds spread it. Between it and Mulberry they are two of the fastest growing good woods for burning. As you said, does smell some but there are worse ones out there. Hackberry is not a wood to burn inside as it likes to pop and it'll send embers flying if you are burning in a open fireplace.

We used a hackberry log in a wood cabin for repairs and it warped pretty bad even after moisture meter said it was good to go so be aware of that.

Here's a bigger hackberry in my yard of all places. Look close and you see an Estwing hatchet on the trunk for scale. Over 4 ft in diameter 4 ft up.
