Hi Tom,
I think its a combination of things. I neglected to check the oil before leaving Friday, (bad me) and noticed lower oil pressure about 20 miles out. We stopped and it was down 3 quarts. It has been smoking more lately and has a leak at the fuel pump that I have not had any luck stopping, so the oil loss was greater than usual. Everything was sounding fine even before adding the oil, and was fine the next 150 miles when it started rapping.
Compression a couple of months ago was 105, which isnt stellar either. I think its time had come!
