I believe the flat topped ones are actually forged. When I had my springs re-sprung I installed new style U bolts because the threads on the old ones were damaged. I've since found forged ones that were in great shape and put them on. I think the forged ones may be stronger and can be re-used, where the shop bent ones will stretch and probable should not be re-used.
