Broken axle?

Hi All,
I recently bought 2 more Power Wagon parts trucks. Picked up the first one yesterday after work. When I was winching it towards the trailer, I noticed that the rear was crabbing sideways. The right rear wheel was dragging. Not at all uncommon with these old rigs that have sat a long time. The thing that got me wondering, the left rear tire would turn a bit, then spin backwards, turn, then spin backwards. I have never noticed them doing that when one wheel was locked, but maybe I just never noticed. I started wondering if a broken axle would bind the diff up differently than just a frozen up brake would?
