Oh, I can see how it can add up to that...easy. I mean figure this...a body shop here charges $100/hr. That's 90hrs work plus say $2000 materials in total. That's $11,000 plus tax. 90 hours? That's only 2 weeks for 1 guy?? So then even a backyard hack like me charges $50/hr & so even at that you only have a month of 40hr weeks.
Prep is hugely time consuming. Rust repair is crazy time consuming. It really depends on your standards but these trucks didn't have show paint jobs when they were new. That said, I can't imagine ever wanting to own a restored truck that didn't look as good as the lousy enamel paint it came with when it was new.
I love doing my own work & I've painted plenty of trucks & cars but if I couldn't paint it as good as a crapy factory orange peel special...I'd hire the $100/hr guy & give him his $12k or so.
Now a day a paint job with no bodywork & just sand & spray costs $5k+....around here.
