The Machinist's rule is - If it slides, grease it, if it rotates, oil it. The axle will sling oil to the spindle and it works it way past the threads of the spindle/outter nut to the grease/bearings. The condition is worsened when the breather at the top of the diff is plugged. Bearings won't fail due to oil being on them. They will fail once grease is worked out and they become dry. Grease is used on moving mechanical parts when no other option is available to lube them.

Just another good design to keep parts lube during long periods between service. My truck's bearings haven't failed from it.
