The seals are "supposed" to keep the gear oil out of the bearings. But, it seems they often leak. I haven't heard or seen any evidence that some oil leaked into the wheel bearings causes any problems. After all, many trucks have their wheel bearings lubricated by the same gear oil as the differential.

I suppose the problem would occur where the gear oil washes out the wheel bearing grease and then, later on, there is insufficient gear oil to lubricate the wheel bearings. Such may be the case when the differential oil level drops below a certain level due to a leak or lack of maintenance.
