As said below, stainless on stainless tends to gall rather quickly, especially the easily available, but non-hardening 300 series. ie: 304, 316, 309

We often make hydraulic cylinder parts out of "ductile iron", which is available in cast rods of various diameters. This is used because of its good "linear wear" resistance, high strength, ease of machining, and lower cost than bronze. It should be available from specialty metal suppliers, or any full service hydraulic repair shop.
