I have been double clutching for so long, it long ago became second nature. I double clutch both up and down. I can't drive anything bigger than a 1/2-ton truck WITHOUT instinctively double clutching, even when it is not needed. I really have to think about it to stop myself and to remember that most newer transmissions are synchronized. The urge is that great.

How far you have to depress the clutch pedal depends on how you have it adjusted. I like mine adjusted tight so I do not have to push it too far to disengage, but loose enough to avoid slippage.

Keep in mind that every Power-Wagon has its own personality. When you get proficient at shifting one, the next one may have a completely different feel to it.

I would not worry about wear and tear on the transmission from learning. Most of the damage is done to them early in their life while the edges of the gears are still sharp. As they wear into a rounded shape, the rate of wear lessens.
