But it still has to run. There used to be quite a few guys who would just "remove all that smog crap" for their friends, and the result was usually bad. Some of that stuff has to be there to make the engine run, or at least it has to be properly bypassed, the hoses plugged or re-routed, etc. You can't just yank out all the hoses and cut off all the wires and expect it to run. There was one I worked on that had a little tiny electrically-actuated solenoid valve down inside the (Hitachi?) carburetor, such that it was impossible to get the cover off the float bowl without breaking the hair wires to the thing. Somehow I managed to solder them back together, but I don't want to ever have to deal with that foolishness again.
