PCV valve: Missing somethng?

Does anyone know what the inside of the PCV valve for my '56 Wagon is supposed to look like? It looks to me like I am missing a rubber washer or something between the valve that moves and where it is supposed to be seated. Right now when the spring pushes it, it is metal against metal. The valve actually looks like it has round groves in it as if it once had a rubber washer or something. The way it is now, air flows in both directions unopposed, which surely can't be right.
