Do we really understand exactly what a toque plate does? is it just the bolts pulling on the holes or is it also the pulling down of the head? Have you seen those stress visualizations they do by stressing an equivalent sized part made of clear acrylic under polarized light? It's quite amazing where all the strains go. I think if the ideas is to replicate what happens in the real engine, you'd need to use something as rigid as a real cylinder head and that presses down on the block just like a real head does. If it was just a matter of torquing bolts into the holes, why would rebuilders have various customized torque plates?

It also seems to me, not being an expert in such things, that a heavy old block under low stress, like we have in a 230, is not going to distort as much under torque as a more modern thinner block, or especially an aluminum block, and if it does distort some, it won't matter as much because the cylinder clearances are looser than in a high-performance engine anyway.
