Tim,
I'm doing a frame up resto on a 48 B1PW. I replaced the upper bushing with a bearing. I ask around and was advised by a few not to do it because of the stress that is put on the upper. But, I talked to man that I know is a reliable source that had done it and has put many miles off road on his truck without a problem.
I shimmed it to where I felt there was a correct amount of pre-load by feel.
Whether you replace it with a bearing or not, I think it would be smart to not put back what's there with the scoring you've described.
They aren't hard to come by. I purchased some from Bob Stahl but I'm sure VPW would have them as well any of the parts guys that deal with old iron. Bearings are available from any local bearing dealer.
