There are supposed to be some heavy grooves in the bronze to distribute grease. I have replaced bronzes with the 23100 roller on 4 PW front axels so far (both W-300 and M-37), and found that if the shim pack is original, no changes were required for the roller. I've set mine to about 5-10 lb-ft preload, and I've put about 70,000 miles on the first one with no change in preload.
I think the bronze cone was used to provide some drag (like a steering damper), so I install a hydraulic steering damper on all my trucks. I highly recommend this! I've spent about $100 on a full set of Timkens for one axel. Good luck! Rob
