They need to eliminate "media mail", formerly known as the "book rate". It's a 19th century relic meant to encourage rural people to read books and magazines. At this point it's mostly just an amazon.com and netflix subsidy. It costs the same amount to deliver a given volume and weight regardless of what's in it, so why should books, CDs, magazines, etc get mailed cheaper than anything else? UPS and FedEx don't give any discount for "media mail", which leaves the USPS with a disproportionate share of the money-losing end of the business.
